Finally available with awd in the US. We in Europe get the 2.8 Turbo V6 with AWD as wagon, sedan and I also think liftback.

It’s been available in the US with AWD for 2 years now. And the 2.8T pushes the car’s weight well over 4,000 lbs. It’s also temperamental and wouldn’t pass US emissions in that state of tune. The 2.0T has the same torque, but way less weight over the front wheels.

The v6 was a carryover from Saab I think. And a bit old. They used them on the Vectra Opc/VXR.

It was used in Saabs, but was an Opel derived engine built by Holden. It is pretty old.

The version in the Insignia VXR/OPC has more power and torque as well as overboost. That version would run afoul of US emissions standards and would qualify it for the gas-guzzler tax.

Lincoln is on the right path. The new crossovers look quite Q5-ish, in a very good way. Now they should just build the Conti to replace the MKS or whatever it’s called.

GM certainly stepped their game up with most models (with exceptions). What I don’t really like about the Impala is the roofline. It looks nice on the Audi A7, but that is bc it is a liftback and not just some sedan.

I could tell by the “whatever it’s called”. The current names are no more asinine than Caddy’s. People just actually got excited about the Caddy’s so they learned the names, that’s all.

Anyhow, I’m all for real names. I just like to argue Lincoln’s are no worse than anyone else’s.

For me, it’s just the opposite. The Lincoln looks better than its predecessor, but almost like they stuck 2 different cars together at the middle.

The new LaCrosse is very sleek, pretty and cohesive front-to-rear.

Kinja'd!!!0

Cadillac’s new names make way more sense than Lincoln’s.

The CT6 and XT5 will indicate where they sit in the line once the other cars follow suit.

The MKC is the smallest CUV, but the biggest is the alphabetically between MKT. The MKX is physically between.

The MKZ is smaller than the MKS.

This is why it’s confusing. Plus, the MKX’s nearest rival is the MDX.

Kinja'd!!!0

NEW names is the key to why this argument doesn’t hold water.

Because before the NEW naming scheme, it was alphabet soup. ATS, CTS, SRX, STS, DTS, XTS

What a mess. What I argue is that if you cared about the Lincoln’s as much you would have learned the names of the MK’s. Which at least all start with MK.

And of course they stuck a new nose on it, it’s a mid-cycle refresh not an “all new”.

I agree it could have been done better but damn the front looks so much better imo.

Kinja'd!!!0

The front looks WAY better.

However, STS and DTS made sense because they were historically trim levels of the Seville and DeVille.

Today, the ATS, CTS, and XTS fall into size progression. The SRX is a completely different scheme for a line of CUVs that never materialized.

Lincoln switched the Zephyr to MKZ, but the Aviator became the MKX. So there was no pattern. The sedan was 2 letters higher than the more expensive CUV based on it.

Then they launched the MKS, which had the lowest alphabetical letter, but was bigger than both the Z and X. Then they launched the T - their biggest car-based model - in between. This one was on letter higher than the sedan it was based on.

They follow no previous name-established pattern. They follow no alphabetical size/price pattern, either.

The Lincoln names are totally random and haphazard. I learned them. But I can’t blame most people for being confused.

Especially since one of the main reasons for doing alphanumeric names is to immediately and clearly communicate where each model falls in line. Cadillac’s current scheme does that better than Lincoln’s and their new scheme will make even more sense.

Just like I said to N2Skylark, Caddy’s didn’t make anymore sense than Lincoln you just cared more about the Caddy lineup and figured it up.

ATS, CTS, XTS, DTS, SRX, STS, Escalade

MKZ, MKC, MKT, MKS, MKX, Navigator

See my point? If you don’t take the effort to learn them they don’t mean anything.

I think Lincoln’s are worse because you don’t get any sense of the vehicle by the name. It doesn’t tell you size or type.

Cadillac’s current scheme does. So does everyone else’s.

Granted, I am not a fan of them, either. Names are better.

DTS and STS don’t exist anymore.

ATS, CTS, and XTS progress alphabetically by size. SRX is a crossover with a different scheme just like Acura, BMW, Benz, etc have.

With Lincoln, you can't tell how big or what type of vehicle it is by the name. With Cadillac, you can.

The production model name was going to be Aviator and changed when Lincoln decided to switch to MK names after the concept debuted.

Which is why the Aviator concept looks so much like the production MKX.

11/18/2015 at 17:05

It essentially replaced the Aviator in price and size. Its concept name was the same as the existing vehicle it was replacing. Then, when production time came, they changed it because Lincoln changed their naming scheme all of a sudden.

No it didn’t the Aviator was an Explorer turned Lincoln. The MKX is an Edge turned Lincoln. The Explorer lived on as a 3 row crossover, the MKX is 2 row and smaller, because it’s an Edge.

Kinja'd!!! AMC/Renauledge > MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner
11/19/2015 at 11:20

Kinja'd!!!0

Then why did Ford name the concept that turned into the MKX after the Aviator, which was still in production?

Lincoln launched the Zephyr production car as a 2006. It matched concept Zephyr name, as well. Then in 2007, they changed it to MKZ.

Are you saying that Lincoln never intended to name the MKX the Aviator, even though its 2005 concept (before even the Zephyr went on sale) carried the same name and was a continuation of a name already in production?

The MKX went on sale for the 2007 model year. Which was the year Lincoln changed Zephyr to MKZ.

The MKX was originally supposed to be called Aviator. Lincoln changed their minds when they decided to switch to the worst alphanumeric scheme, and hastily. It was so hasty, they had to rename and relaunch their volume model in its second year.

It was not a well thought-out plan.

Kinja'd!!!0

I’ve never said it was a well thought out plan.

There’s just nothing to show that the MKX would have EVER hit the street with that name. Plenty of car companies have played that game in the past.

Ford was renaming all kinds of things around that time. 500 -> Taurus is a good example. Montego -> Sable is another.

It was a time of insanity.

Kinja'd!!! AMC/Renauledge > MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner
11/19/2015 at 13:21

Kinja'd!!!

Ford originally intended to name the 2008 Taurus “Five Hundred” and the Taurus X “Freestyle” and the Sable “Montego.”

I know that because when they revealed the facelifted production models, they wore the old names. Then Mulalley changed them at the last minute after the cars were shown.

I know that the MKX was supposed to be named Aviator because its concept bore that name, just like the Zephyr’s did. Regardless of what it was originally supposed to be named, the decision to call it MKX was very, very late in the game because Lincoln didn’t decide to switch to alphanumerics until the MKX had practically gone on sale.

It was supposed to be called something other than MKX. Whether Aviator or something else. But Aviator was the assumption at the time. All the Ford forums I was part of back then called it Aviator before the shift to alphanumerics was announced. And it stood to reason because its concept was called that. Just like the pattern they established with Zephyr.
